Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham moving around DT Ndamukong Suh - NFL News
The Detroit Lions are looking to shift around defensive tackle, Ndamukong Suh, in the new season as they try to add more unpredictability in their best tackle’s game.
Suh who has always lined up at the left defensive tackle position during both his two seasons in the National Football League (NFL), will now also line up at the right side of the defensive line according to Lions defensive coordinator, Gunther Cunningham.
The defensive tackle last season had decreased production than his rookie year in which he took the NFL by storm with some brilliant performances after the Lions drafted him as the second overall pick.
That decrease in production led Tampa Bay Buccaneers legend and Super Bowl winner, Warren Sapp, to launch a tirade against how the player was used during Super Bowl week.
Sapp criticised the way Suh always lined up at the left hand side where his opponents expected him and suggested that moving the defensive tackle around would have helped greatly in improving his production.
The former Buccaneer had said.
"I like (Lions general manager) Martin Mayhew, so I'm like, 'Somebody want to put him on the right side a little more?' Jesus, you put the man in a position where he's here, and now people have wham blocks and all that because they know he's right there
every time.
He continued.
“When I was (alternating sides), you had to map this thing out. ... He's right there every time. I'm like, 'Come on, Gunther, stop it.' And then you put (Nick) Fairley behind him? Oh, so we don't get to see them side by side?"
In the organised team activities (OTAs) Suh is also taking snaps from the right side and Cunningham speaking after practice with the
Detroit Free Press said that the change would make Sapp much happier.
“Warren will be happy; I’m going to move him all over the place now. As a matter of fact, I showed him some of Warren’s tape. Warren should be really happy.”
Suh’s sacks decreased massively in 2011-12 as he made just four sacks on opposing quarterbacks while also making 36 tackles. In his rookie season, though the defensive tackle was brilliant with 66 tackles and 10 sacks to his name.
Hopefully moving him around will help the Lions get more from Suh this year.
