Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz says few players tainting image of franchise - NFL News
After a week filled with reports in the media about the indiscipline of Detroit Lions players, coach, Jim Schwartz is rightfully angry at all the negative press the franchise has received lately.
First it was the training ground incident between wide receiver, Titus Young, and safety, Louis Delmas, in which both players got engaged in a heated argument which ended after Young punched his teammate on the face from behind.
Young was barred from training with the franchise for the rest of the week over the incident as punishment.
However, just a few days later young defensive tackle, Nick Fairley, was caught by Alabama State troopers on Saturday driving at a speed of 100 miles per hour in his Cadillac Escalade.
When he was stopped by Police, Fairley was found possessing marijuana and was visibly drunk leading Police to arrest him.
He was released later after posting a bond with the Police.
Coach, Jim Schwartz speaking to the media after practice on Tuesday was not impressed with the recent bad press his team was receiving and panned the two players for tarnishing the image of the entire team.
Speaking to the Detroit Free Press he said.
"What we have here is a case of a few guys tainting the reputations of a lot of others,"
Adding further he said.
"The actions of the few have affected the reputation of not just the other guys, but also the organization as a whole, and that's obviously not a good situation."
The Lions had received much praise throughout the 2011-12 season as they ended with a winning regular season record and entered their first playoff game since 1999.
In the offseason though attention has shifted on to players whose actions are putting the franchise in a bad light and Schwartz finds that disconcerting.
"There's some maturing things that go on and some mistakes that guys make that they learn from, but what we have here is a situation that it appears that a couple guys haven't learned and that is concerning,"
He continued.
“We are hopeful that they can be able to get this under control and be able to put them behind them."
Hopefully any other such incidents do not distract the Lions from their offseason programme as they look to once again make a push for the playoffs.
