Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz stays mum over contract extension - NFL News
Last season saw the Detroit Lions put away their tag of being one of the worst teams in the National Football League (NFL) as they finally had a winning season and in the process ended their long running playoff drought.
The credit for the turnaround in their fortunes goes to general manager, Martin Mayhew who brought in some big talent into the roster and head coach, Jim Schwartz who instilled a sense of unity and purpose into the players.
Schwartz has become a firm fan favourite at Ford Field and that is the biggest reason fans are fretting over the coach’s contract which expires after the 2012-13 season.
With only one year left on the deal fans are hoping that the head coach will sign an extension to his deal which will keep him in Detroit for the long term.
The Detroit Free Press in an interview on Monday asked the Lions head coach about his contract but in typical Schwartz style the coach dodged the question and simply replied.
"I don't talk about my contract, that's why,"
When pressed further to answer the question, Schwartz once again replied.
"I don't talk about my contract."
The head coach is known for keeping injury news and contract negotiations close to his chest. Lions fans though should not worry too much as the head coach is likely to sign a new extension before the end of the 2012-13 season.
Detroit Lions last year ended with a 10-6 record and made it to the playoff rounds.
That achievement though becomes even more impressive since the Lions had not played a playoff game since 1999 while just a few years ago the franchise had gone the entire season without a single win.
Schwartz’s arrival changed everything as the head coach instilled a fighting mentality in his players and with quarterback, Matthew Stafford overcoming his injury problems the Lions became a team that could go toe-to-toe with the best in the NFL.
This year the Lions are targeting bigger prizes than just reaching the playoffs and fans after years of hurt are finally feeling optimistic about the team.
The Lions are expected to take another step to becoming real challengers this season.
