Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz takes responsibility for team’s failure – NFL News
Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz has accepted the blame for the team’s poor performance this season.
Talking to press on Tuesday, Schwartz seemed disappointed for not meeting the expectations of winning more games.
Lions have won four and lost 10 games, and they are standing dead last in National Football Conference (NFC) North. They have two more games to play in the regular season, and are currently on a seven-game losing streak.
According to Schwartz, he should have done better than this.
He said:
"The ultimate responsibility of the team is (with) the head coach, and I need to do a better job,"
Lions ended the last season at 10-6, but they have lost five close games this season. Talking about such situations, Schwartz said:
"We've had a lot of games this year that came down to one critical play in the fourth quarter that you look at and say, 'Hey, if we made that one we would have won the game,’”
Meanwhile, Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has also accepted that his poor performance is the reason behind this bad season.
Stafford has completed 374 of 629 passes for 4,252 yards and scored 17 touchdowns along with 15 interceptions.
According to the quarterback, he understands that it was his bad that he could not play better, and that he should have worked even harder for a successful season.
Schwartz repeated that all the responsibility for the performance of team depends on the coaching staff.
Arizona Cardinals is among the weakest teams this season, and they outclassed Lions in their Week 15 game by 38-10. It was a shameful defeat for Lions.
However, Schwartz has still praised his defence for performing well when needed. According to the Associated Press, he said:
"We never thought we were out of it. We just didn't make the plays to get back in it. Our defence fought hard the whole game. We didn't give them good field position. They kept us in it."
On December 22, Lions are going to play their Week 16 game against Atlanta Falcons, who have already qualified for the playoffs.
