Detroit Lions keeping silent on number 23 pick in drafts - NFL News
The Detroit Lions made it to the playoffs for the first time since 1999 this season after ending the regular season with a 10-6 record.
That result also gave them their lowest draft pick since 1992.
The Lions ended up with the number 23 pick in this year’s drafts and that has led to a change in strategy for general manager, Martin Mayhew.
Mayhew in previous drafts has always talked highly about the players Detroit would bring in to the franchise but this year with so many teams above them and those below looking to trade up, the general manager has not given many indications as to who he
will bring in.
Speaking at a pre-draft press conference on Tuesday, Mayhew said
“I think at 23 especially, it’s really important to be cognizant of being careful about who you’re talking about and how you’re talking about them,”
Adding further he said.
“We’ve been through this before; I’ve been through this process before where you have your heart set on one guy and then somebody’s gone because somebody moved up in front of you and took that guy. So we’re going to be very careful about who we talk about
and how we talk about him.”
Detroit may well look for a cornerback to bring in to the roster from the drafts but Mayhew said that the franchise is not looking for a particular position.
“It's about not reaching for a particular position,"
2011-12 was the season that the Lions finally ended their run of losing seasons in the National Football League (NFL).
With the team’s spine built on young and talented players such as defensive tackle, Ndamukong Suh, quarterback, Matthew Stafford, and wide receiver, Calvin Johnson the Lions became a force to contend with.
In the offseason the franchise concentrated on resigning its free agents to new long-term deals including a mega deal for Johnson who became the highest paid receiver in the league.
The Lions are ready to roar in the new season and it will be interesting to see which young talent they bring in from the draft this year.
The drafts take place on Thursday, April 26 with the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Redskins having the first two picks.
