Detroit Lions president, Tom Lewand, wants Super Bowl Championships not just playoffs - NFL News
Detroit Lions made it to the playoffs in the last season for the first time since 1999. This year though the franchise is aiming even higher.
The Lions had been the league’s punching bag for many seasons before head coach, Jim Schwartz took over and brought in some big draft picks including quarterback, Matthew Stafford and defensive tackle, Ndamukong Suh.
The performance in 2011-12 was a far cry from the team which just a few years ago went an entire season without a single victory to its name.
Team president, Tom Lewand though is not happy with qualifying for just the playoffs he wants to go all the way and win the Super Bowl.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Lewand said that just qualifying for the playoffs was not good enough and their main goal now for the new season is to march all the way to the Super Bowl in New Orleans.
"Our focus is on getting better. Last year wasn't good enough for us. Our goal is not to be a wild card participant. Our goals are a lot higher than that.”
Adding further he said.
“It was okay. It was a step in the right direction, but we've got a lot of work ahead of us and our goals are out there to be achieved and that goal ultimately is Super Bowl championships, not just one, but many."
That just shows the confidence that Lewand has in his team’s abilities.
The Lions spent the current offseason re-signing their own free agents and gave star wide receiver, Calvin Johnson a new multi-million dollar contract which has made him the highest paid receiver in the National Football League (NFL).
With the team boasting a brilliant offence led admirably by Stafford and a defence that will only get better the Lions are roaring for even better times ahead.
Talking about Johnson’s new contract he said.
"Having the cap room is far less important than having Calvin Johnson for hopefully the rest of his career.”
The Lions are young, hungry and ready to challenge for big honours in the upcoming season and the franchise is finally showing signs of leaving behind its recent woes.
