Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand confident of prospects in 2012-13 season - NFL News
Detroit Lions president, Tom Lewand participated in a web-chat with fans on Thursday and touched upon a variety of points for the upcoming drafts and the 2012-13 season.
The Lions reached the playoffs for the first time since 1999 last season as they qualified for the wildcard rounds after a 10-6 record in the regular season.
Lewand though expressed that the goal for the franchise is not just the playoffs and they are targeting bigger honours this season with the Super Bowl being the main priority.
Speaking to fans he said.
“Our ultimate goal is to win the Super Bowl. There are 31 teams that do not have successful seasons every year, by that definition. We can't look too far ahead in trying to meet that goal and instead focus on getting better in all areas of the organization
every day as we try to win our first Super Bowl.”
The franchise has struggled in recent years to put together winning seasons and just recently in 2008-09 went 0-16.
However, the roster has been strengthened considerably and with quarterback, Matthew Stafford, wide receiver, Calvin Johnson and defensive end, Ndamukong Suh in the spine of the team the Lions are deservedly confident in their expectations from the new season.
Lewand also said that running backs, Jahvid Best and Mikel Leshoure continue to practice as they look to get back to full fitness and he expects both to contribute massively in the upcoming season.
The Lions were handicapped in the last season with an inexistent running game which put more pressure on quarterback, Matthew Stafford to pass the ball.
Cliff Avril who is currently franchise tagged by the Lions is still awaiting a new contract and has not taken part in the voluntary training programme but Lewand is confident that a deal could be made as he revealed that the franchise has given multiple
offers to the defensive end.
“[We] continue to have dialogue with Cliff and his agent. We have made him some very significant multiyear offers. We look forward to having him this year, at least on the franchise tag, and hopefully, beyond.”
It seems that Lewand is confident that the Lions this year will make great strides and after including some more talent through the drafts the franchise will be a tough prospect for their opponents in the new season.
