Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford returns to practice, expected to play – NFL News
Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford returned to practice field on Monday, August 27, 2012, after getting his left hand injured during the preseason game against Oakland Raiders.
Stafford spent some time on the field. He was able to participate in the first team practice and managed to quickly recover from the injury to his non-throwing hand.
Stafford broke the blood vessel of his right hand when he collided with the Raiders’ defensive end Dave Tollefson during Saturday’s game.
Stafford managed to complete eight out of 10 passes during the game. After being taken on to the sideline, his left hand was heavily wrapped.
After the X-ray reports came out negative, Lions were pretty sure that Stafford would be able to play in the season opener against St. Louis Rams on September 09. After the practice session, Stafford talked with media and said:
"I think the biggest thing for me was the fact that I had to come out of the game. Had it been a regular-season game, I'm sure I would've found a way to get back on that field."
In his three seasons in the league, Stafford has gone through many serious injuries. He missed six games of his rookie season and was able to play just two games in the 2010 season.
Last season was Stafford’s fittest ever as a professional as he was able to play throughout the entire season. He was able to cover 5,038 yards and got 41 touchdowns.
Stafford was initially worried about his injury as his hand got a bit of swelling, but was relieved to get his hand back to original form. He does not think that it should be considered as an injury. Stafford said:
"No doubt. I feel better. I wasn't in a walking boot or anything like that. I've got all my movement."
Lions would feel very relieved after getting their Stafford back to full fitness. They are facing many injury concerns. On top of those is the concern regarding running back Jahvid Best who is still on the PUP list and will miss the first six games of the
season.
