Detroit Lions quarterback Shaun Hill breaks arm and Zack Follett hospitalized
The Detroit Lions' October 17 match-up against the New York Giants was a costly one. The Lions lost quarterback Shaun Hill to a broken arm, and linebacker Zack Follett has been hospitalized after a frightening collision in the fourth quarter.
Hill left the game late in the first half after being hit by Giants defensive tackle Barry Cofield.
"Shaun Hill has a fracture in his forearm, his non-throwing arm," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. "He wanted to go back in, but he had a hard time, no matter how we splinted it, trying to take a snap."
The incident that sent Follett to the hospital saw him go helmet-to-helmet with the Giants' Jason Pierre-Paul during a fourth quarter kick return. Follett was carted off the field after being tended to by medical personnel for several minutes.
The Lions released a statement after the game regarding Follett's condition that read, "Both the MRI and CT tests performed on Zack this evening at the Hackensack Medical Center were negative. Zack is resting comfortably and has feeling and movement in all
of his extremities. He will continue to be monitored throughout the evening. We expect no further updates until Monday."
After the collision, players on both teams took a knee to pray for his safety.
In an eerie twist of fate, the injury to Follet took place at roughly the same spot on the field where Rutgers' defensive tackle Eric Legrand suffered a spinal cord injury against Army the day before.
The second-year linebacker, Follett, has started two games for the Lions this year and had 12 tackles. The Lions will know more in the coming days after Follett receives more tests to determine the extent of the injury.
Shaun Hill had started five games at quarterback so far this year, completing over 60 percent of his passes and throwing for just over 1300 yards.
