Detroit Lions release CB Aaron Berry: Cornerback releases statement of Apology
It seems the Detroit Lions finally had enough of their players continuously being involved in embarrassing off-the-field incidents that have brought the franchise serious negative publicity this offseason.
A large number of Detroit Lions players have found themselves being arrested over a number of incidents with the franchise suspending the player to expressing its utter disappointment over the matter.
However, something snapped in the franchise when cornerback Aaron Berry was arrested for the second time this offseason.
The franchise had repeatedly warned after each incident that appropriate action will be taken against those who violate the Lions discipline and when Berry was arrested a second time the franchise tore up his contract and released him from the team.
Berry was arrested on charges of simple assault on Saturday and was said to have brandished a gun during the incident.
The Lions on Monday announced the release of Berry from the franchise due to behaviour which adversely affected the franchise.
Lions’ president Tom Lewand in a statement said:
"We have repeatedly stressed to everyone in our organization that there will be appropriate consequences when an expected standard of behaviour is not upheld."
Berry’s release will be a warning to all players on the Detroit Lions roster to get their act together and keep themselves out of trouble.
The cornerback on Monday released a statement of apology after his release and according to
ESPN said:
"Words cannot describe how embarrassed I am right now."
The statement further read:
"I've let my family, my teammates, my coaches and the entire Detroit Lions organization, including the fans down and I'm so sorry.”
“I want to thank Coach Schwartz, Coach Cunningham, Martin Mayhew and all the Lions staff, players and fan base for such a wonderful opportunity where I was able to showcase my football skills. Again, I'm so sorry for letting you all down."
Berry had played for the Lions for two years however, he remained a bit part player for the franchise throughout his career starting just four games, three in 2011 and a single start in 2010.
His release should be enough warning for the rest of the roster to keep their head down and concentrate on the game.
