Detroit Lions remain cautious on Safety Louis Delmas recovery - NFL News
The Detroit Lions urgently need to shore up their defence after what has been a surprising and disappointing start to the 2012/13 season.
Detroit is currently 1-3 with the defence highly culpable for the losses. The team also has no interceptions to its name and has struggled to keep opposing quarterbacks out.
Poor defending was to blame especially during the 44-41 overtime defeat to the Tennessee Titans in week 3 with the opposition scoring on 71 and 61-yard plays.
However, the Lions during the bye-week got some good news as safety Louis Delmas returned to practice after recovering from knee surgery.
Delmas took his first practice recently since July 31st and even though he practiced without a brace he still just took part in limited practice drills.
It is still doubtful whether Delmas will take part in the game against Philadelphia Eagles on October 14th and the coaches are exercising great caution with the player.
Head coach Jim Schwartz speaking to the Detroit Free Press said that it was too soon to tell whether the safety will return to the starting line-up.
He said:
“It’s going to depend on how he responds. And if he responds well to this, then how he responds through a week of practice. But we’re still leading to that point.”
Speaking about the performance of Delmas in practice he said:
“He only did individual today, but he did it at a high level. I think the key for him is going to be not how he did today, because he did well, it’s going to be how he does tomorrow, how the knee responds -- if it swells up, if it’s stiff, those things.”
The safety himself said that the felt good returning back to practice and also acknowledged that he could have practiced last week as he felt he was good to go.
However, he said that he will only return back on the field when the Lions coaching staff gives him the go-ahead.
Delmas’ return has been met with great positivity by his teammates who missed his presence on the field and the Lions fans will hope that the safety returns back soon to help the Lions get their season back on track.
