Detroit Lions tackle Jeff Backus recovering from injury, targets OTAs for return - NFL News
Detroit Lions tackle, Jeff Backus has never missed the start of season practices and does not plan to let this year be the first time as he continues his recovery targeting the start of training camp to return back on the field.
Speaking in an interview with the Lions official website on Friday he said.
"The goal is to just get stronger, get my (pectoral muscles) stronger and my biceps stronger, and once I get into OTAs, be smart about things and see how it goes,"
Adding further he said.
"I'm not in there doing some of the things the younger guys are doing (working out), but I think at this point in anyone's career ... their workout is a little bit different,"
The 34-year-old suffered from a torn bicep after the Lions playoff wildcard round game against the New Orleans Saints.
The injury required surgery which Backus had in January and his recovery is still in progress.
The tackle also said that he is feeling much better currently and will continue to get stronger to return back to his peak level ahead of the new season.
"Coming off surgery, it's about working myself in. I feel great right now. There hasn't been any setbacks or limitations, it's just about getting stronger."
Detroit reached its first playoffs last year since the 1999 season as the franchise ended up with a 10-6 record after some brilliant performances.
That achievement was made even more special as just a few years before the franchise had gone the entire regular season without recording a single victory.
The Lions offensive line played some of the best football in the league last year with quarterback, Matthew Stafford and wide receiver, Calvin Johnson especially in great form.
This year the Lions are targeting even bigger prizes and Backus will be an important cog for the offence if they are to achieve their objectives for the upcoming season.
However, Detroit is taking no chances with Backus’ uncertain health and will have already drafted tackle, Riley Reiff with their first round pick.
Hopefully the veteran will quickly recover from his injury and get back on the training ground soon.
