Question:

Detroit Octopus...Wild idea?

Will fans someday sneak one of those freaky 80-pound Giant Pacific Octopuses into JLA and heave it on the ice? How would Sobotka wave that? I heard about a 30-pounder back in '95 and wonder if that would ever be broken.

And I'm a Pens fan :-|

  1. This is not a response to the original question but a correction to an answer.

    There were 6 original teams.

The 8 legs of the octopus represent the number of post season wins that it used to take to hoist the Cup.

  2. While I would love to see an 80-pounder thrown onto the ice at the Joe, I don't know how someone would manage to sneak that in!  I'm okay with the small octopi, as long as they keep showing up.  GO WINGS!

  3. I'm sure somebody will throw one of the big ones onto the ice as long as they can get it over the glass.  It's not like the security staff at the Joe really checks that hard for octopi and refuses to let them in.  It's tradition in Detroit so more than likely the octopi will be all around the ice.   As long as it's the end of the game and Al can get it in the air, I have no doubt that he's swing that thing around.  Figure that the Stanely Cup is heavier than that and the guys can get it in the air while on skates so as long as you grab a comple tentacles at once you might be able to get a decent swing out of the sucker!

  4. During the 1995 playoffs, Bob Dubisky and Larry Shotwell, co-workers at a meat and seafood retail company near Detroit, tossed a 38-pound octopus onto the ice during the National Anthem prior to Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. The year after, the duo struck again with a 50-pounder in the Conference Finals. Although the feat received no airtime on the nationally broadcast game, the octopus was proudly displayed on the hood of the Zamboni between periods.

  5. Of course they will on Detroit's home ice Monday night. It's a tradition. The eight "legs" of the octopus stand for the original 8 teams of the NHL and that's the RED WINGS!!! GO WINGS!!!! Yes...one more to go!  :-) I have certainly seen some large octopi on the ice and they will continue to do so. They just get them off the ice after the Red Wings score a goal.

  6. originally 8 legs are for total wins in the playoffs to win the cup. Original six in hockey  wings ,leafs, blackhawks, bruins, habbs, rangers. I'm a wing fan and hats off to the guins, that is some of the best hockey iv ever seen and ive been a hockey nut since the 70s win lose or draw it is good hockey.

  7. I'd like to see someone try to throw an octopus that big.

  8. I would love to see that again......but 2008 GO RED WINGS!!!!........with many more to come. We are finally called a Dynasty TEAM!!!!......Oh YA baby!

  9. Sidney Crosby might try to hump it though. They both weigh the same.

  10. I don't know, maybe a 31 lb one but I doubt that an eighty pounder will even be able to be brought into the arena. I personally don't like that tradition just because it involves killing an animal for no reason but to throw it on the ice. I'm not a vegetarian and I don't mind hunting if you eat what you kill. Same with fishing. (unless you throw it back) Anyway, I wish they got rid of the whole tradition altogether. But, I have no power to do that. lol

How much can a octopus weigh anyway? What's the record?

  11. ahaha. man, if an 80-pounder got thrown onto the ice, i would laugh so hard. that would be crazy!

but really crazy part thought is how they would bring it in?! not in their pants, i hope. ahh! haha
