Detroit Pistons 2010-2011 preview

Detroit were bad last season and by the looks of things they’re going to be bad this season.

They didn’t make any big additions this summer and are saddled with some pretty bad contracts. They won 27 games last season and are projected to be around that mark again, probably give them 3-5 more games considering the team has been together for a year.

It’s not going to pretty for fans in Detroit.

Off-season moves

Tracy McGrady was, by name, was the Pistons’ big off-season move, a move that probably won’t turn out well given McGrady’s health issues. His knees and back have always been concerns and at 31 he’s not likely to find the remedy now. That said, at the veterans minimum it’s not bad value.

General manager Joe Dumars re-signed Will Bynum for three years, $10.5 million which isn’t actually a bad contract but that money could have been spent on someone with better passing skills, despite Dumars’ 4.5 assists per game in 26 minutes of play.

The best addition for Detroit came from the draft with Greg Monroe, who could be a real star. The power forward should provide some valuable rebounding and offensive play. If he learns to keep the fouls down and improves his defensive play, Detroit could have a star in just a few years.

Prediction

Don’t expect much from the Pistons this year. If they manage to stay fit then maybe they could pull out a 40-win season, but that’s unlikely with a +5 win mark on last season’s 29 looking the more likely total.
