Detroit Pistons guard Will Bynum still waiting for a decent contract to play overseas: NBA Update
The Detroit Pistons guard Will Bynum is still waiting for a decent contract to play overseas during lockout in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Bynum and his agent are still keeping their options open, but denied any
potential link with any foreign team. Although, three weeks ago, Bynum’s agent Mark Bartelstein told the media about Bynum’s potential chances to play overseas during lockout period in the league, but on Monday, he said on Bynum’s behalf that he is not considering
playing overseas and also had no scheduled timetable in this regard.
Bartelstein said in the media with little ambiguity, “There is no specific deadline, if something comes up and it makes sense for Will, we will do it.”
The lockout in the NBA is forcing many league players to play overseas. Several players have already signed with many international basketball clubs, but many players are still playing their cards with great care and still waiting
for right opportunity to come. However, when last month basketball’s world governing body the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) gave permission to all the NBA players to sign with any overseas team, the reaction was overwhelming in the league.
Many basketball experts came forward and speculated about the NBA players’ mass departure from the league to play overseas during work stoppage. This work stoppage has caused by the NBA owners and the Players Association while
both parties are not taking serious measures to resolve the labour dispute.
Last week, a prominent NBA agent Happy Walters was also very excited to see FIBA’s ruling in favour of all the league’s players. Walters made a comment on a social media website which stats, “I can confidently say that more NBA
or RFA (restricted free agent) and UFA (unrestricted free agent) are going 2 start signing soon in Foreign Leagues, U may even hear of some surprises this weekend. Some big names are close to giving it a shot while the silliness of the lockout continues. Stay
tuned....”
Meanwhile, not many players opted to play overseas especially after the permission was granted to the NBA players. Will Bynum is also among those players who are playing their cards with great care. He also knows about the risk
involve in playing overseas and not hurrying for any overseas offer.
The NBA Commissioner David Stern also spoke out in the media regarding risk involvement if any player declares himself open to play overseas. Stern said with great concern for these willing players who have opted to play overseas
during lockout. Stern said, playing overseas is certainly a risk and if any player gets injured, this could jeopardize player’s NBA contract as the NBA and FIBA do not cover players’ medical insurance during lockout periods.
