New Orleans Hornets lost 13th of their last 14 games on the road and their 5th consecutive at the Palace Of Auburn Hills on 4th February 2012 against the Detroit Pistons. The game was a well contested
affair however and the Detroit Pistons won it with a narrow margin of 89-87.
For Hornets, forward Trevor Ariza scored 26 points, the highest tally of any player on the night, while Greivis Vasquez and reserve Al-Farouq Aminu both ended up scoring 14 points each.
Greg Monroe was on the song as he recorded his seventh double-double for Pistons this season - 16 rebounds and seasons high 24 points.
"That's mostly just effort," Monroe said of his performance. "I know this is our seventh game in nine nights, but we just have to keep working hard. That's how this whole season is going to be”.
Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey was another name who made a notable contribution with 17 points. Other players with double figures were Tayshaun Prince and off the bench Jonas Jerebko, scoring 11 points each.
Brandon Knight, the rookie guard, had to retire earlier due to a hard blow on the nose, and managed only 2 points.
Both the teams had to play without their starting point guards, as Brandon left with injury and Jarrett Jack missed the game due to a knee problem. The Hornets took an early lead of 6-0 in the beginning of the quarter but lost
it to the Pistons quickly, as Detroit dominated the rest of the quarter finishing with 25-23 lead.
The Hornets came back strong at the Pistons in the 2nd frame; their momentum coming with a 12-4 run before going into halftime, which gave them a 44-41 lead.
The third quarter belonged to the Pistons as they clawed off the deficit and with Monroe’s electrifying performance, entered into the last 12 minutes confidently with 65-61 lead.
Detroit pressed hard with an early 8-0 spurt stretching their lead further. The Hornets strived to engulf the gap but the time ran out on them. With clock expiring they faced their 5th consecutive fiasco.
Final score Pistons 89 and Hornets 87.
"This is the dog days of the NBA right now," New Orleans coach Monty Williams said. "A lot of players are kind of going through the motions right now, and we certainly played that way tonight. I thought we'd be fresher because
I gave them yesterday off, but maybe that hurt us."
The Hornet’s ordeal doesn’t seem to be coming to an end as they are scheduled to face Sacramento Kings and Chicago Bulls in the upcoming matches.
