Detroit Pistons second-round pick Kyle Singler reaches an agreement with Spanish team: NBA News
"Not really as of right now," was the answer by Detroit Pistons second-round draft pick Kyle Singler, when he was inquired some time ago, whether he would play in a foreign league during this lockout. However, it seems that after
the players union and league filed law suits against each other, Kyle has had changed his mind.
According to the latest reports, on Monday Kyle struck a deal with a Spanish team Lucentum Alicante that plays in the country’s top pro league. The 23 year old player, who can play at both small forward and power forward position,
was not just able to find a job overseas, but also got an escape clause in his contract that will allow him to return to the United States whenever the lockout ends.
Both Singler and his agent, Greg Lawrence, were not available for the comment, but Kyle’s father told that it was a “good opportunity.”
"This was a great opportunity to sign a good contract which allows him to get paid, play for a very good team in the top European league and have the ability to come back and play in the NBA when the lockout is over," Ed Singler
said. "It is a win-win for Alicante and Kyle. We are really happy for him."
Singler was picked up by the Detroit Pistons as 33rd overall from the June draft, had made the best choice by finding a job in the overseas. Especially, as he didn’t get a guaranteed contract like the draftees of the
first round got.
Moreover, in the absence of summer league and with lockout probably on the verge of effecting the next season, Singler now got a chance to gain some experience in a competitive environment that will help him tweak his game too.
In early July, Kyle Singler told the Free Press he wasn’t interested in playing overseas. The Pistons picked the 6-foot-8 small forward in the second round of June's draft (No. 33 overall) out of Duke.
Prior declaring for the 2011 National Basketball Association Draft, Singler represented Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team for four seasons. Where, Kyle remained quite exceptional, especially during the 2010 National Collegiate
Athletic Association Championship run. He was declared the Most Outstanding Player (MOP) of the Final Four round. Singler attained his best scoring average at college level during the same season, 17.7 points and seven rebounds per game.
Singler was chosen as the pre-season Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year and over of his brilliant performance, got selected for both pre-season first team All-ACC, and pre-season first team All-American. In his last season
with the Blue Devils, Singler scored at an average of 16.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.
