Detroit Pistons trade Ben Gordon and rights to a first round draft pick for Corey Maggette – NBA Update
On Tuesday, a trade involving Detroit Pistons sending over Ben Gordon and protected rights to a first round draft pick to Charlotte Bobcats in return for Corey Maggette took place.
By acquiring Magette and sending over Gordon, the Pistons have been able to clear up salary space of around $15 million plus they have gotten their hands on a seasoned veteran who has a wide experience of playing in the NBA.
“We welcome Corey Maggette to our organization in a transaction that provides us with a veteran scorer and defender in addition to increased roster flexibility going forward,” - Joe Dumars
Magette had to sit out most of last season due to various injuries and held an average of 15 points. However his career average is slightly better at 16.2 points. He provides Detroit with much needed backup presence to Tayshaun Prince at the forward position
and 13 years experience in the league along with it.
He would also be able to provide a lot of help on the defensive end plus his perimeter offense can be beneficial for young centre Greg Monroe. Magette can create shots for him-self and his team mates.
On the other hand one day after newly appointed head coach of the Bobcats, Mike Dunlap, stated that the team needed a player who can provide them with width on the floor and good three point shooting; Ben Gordon duly arrived.
"With this trade, we have acquired two things we covet in our plan to build this team," said Rod Higgins. "By acquiring a young and proven talent in Ben Gordon and a future first-round draft pick, we have both addressed our need for three-point shooting
and acquired an additional asset to help continue to improve our team in the future."
Gordon held an average of 12.5 points last season which included a standout performance against Denver Nuggets, mid season. He was able to muster up 45 points and shot the ball 9 of 9 from three point land. He was also the league`s Sixth Man of the Year
back in 2005 when he was a part of the Chicago Bulls.
Along with acquiring Gordon, Bobcats also have the rights to Pistons first round pick which is valid from 2013-2016. The pick will remain with the Pistons if they have a top 14 lottery pick in 2013, top nine in 2014 and will stay with Detroit if they have
the first overall pick in 2015.
