Detroit Pistons veteran Ben Wallace considering retirement – NBA Update
Detroit Pistons veteran centre Ben Wallace has dedicated 15 years of service to the game of basketball and it seems now that the player is ready to hang up his snickers.
Wallace, on the night of his 1055th game earlier this season, promulgated that he will be retiring at the end of 2011-2012 season. Now with just 6 games left in his career we have to wait and see if the 37 year old has changed
his mind or not.
"Once you get here, you want to be able to show everybody that you're capable of going out and playing at a high level night in and night out," Wallace said. "I'm just proud to have had the opportunity to come here and play."
There were certain patterns that can lead us to conclude that Wallace hasn’t completely shut the doors of return. Even on Tuesday before the matchup with Washington Wizards, Wallace said that he will see if he is physically able
to run for one more time after this season.
“That’s always been the case, the last couple of years,” said Wallace. “When the season is over with, I’ll see how my body feels. See if I can get my strength back. If can help this team, maybe I’ll come back.”
Wallace story resembles to that of current New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin. He too was undrafted and was signed as a rookie free agent by the Washington Bullets. He quickly established himself as a lethal defensive player
after getting on board with Pistons in 2000. He won 4 NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards while his most celebrated accomplishment was to help Detroit Pistons win 2004 NBA championship.
After being traded to Pistons in 2000, he quickly transformed
from a bench warmer into a heart warmer . He led NBA in rebounds and blocks per game in 2001-02 and also won the NBA defensive player of the year award consecutively for the next three seasons.
His outstanding defensive skills completely shadowed his scoring ability. He is averaging 1.3 points per game in this season while he is 5.8 in his career. On the other hand he averaged 9.7 rebounds per game in his career and 4.2
in this season.
He played for Chicago Bulls from 2006 to 2008 and averaged 5.7 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game with Bulls. Later on, he was traded off to Cleveland Cavaliers where he stayed from February 21, 2008 to August 7, 2009.
He is now playing his 3rd season with Pistons since coming back to the franchise and it might be the last. The last time Wallace was asked about his retirement he sounded very confident.
"No consideration to coming back," he said. "This is definitely my last year."
