Detroit Red Wing Players making Team Proud Overseas during Lockout -NHL Update
It might be tough times in the National Hockey League (NHL) as it faces its second lockout in less than a decade, but many players are thriving abroad, including a number of faces that belong to the Detroit Red Wings franchise in North America.
Both stakeholders, the league and Players’ Association are still negotiating on a new collective bargaining agreement, which has already cost them the entire preseason, a major and significant chunk of the 2012-2013 NHL regular season and most recently,
the 2012 Winter Classic. Detroit Red Wings were scheduled to be a part of that historic matchup against Toronto Maple Leafs, which was set to be held at the legendary Michigan Stadium, but playing abroad, has eased their pains of missing out this time around.
Henrik Zetterberg is definitely one of the most well known players around the NHL and a major reason why Detroit is termed to be one of the best sports franchise in the world. He has been raking in the points abroad as well as he is playing in the Swiss
Elite League at the moment with Zug. He already has eight goals and five assists in seven games played and continues to dominate on all levels.
Veteran Red Wing Pavel Datsyuk is also another big performer, but he is in the Russian, Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), playing with CSKA Moscow. He already has a total of 19 points in 15 games with the club, consisting of six goals and 13 assists, doing
more than his part to levitate the team above the rest.
While there is no certainty in the NHL as to when the regular season will kick off after eight weeks since the previous collective bargaining agreement came to an end have passed already. Stakeholders continue to meet and have been doing so aggressively
these past few days. Most players have temporary contracts and will be able to rejoin once the puck is dropped again, but that in the end, depends on the player and whether he wants to make that comeback or not.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out in the end.
