Detroit Red Wings-Nashville Predators Quarterfinal Series Review -NHL Playoffs Special
The Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators 2012 Stanley Cup Western Conference Playoff Quarterfinal series was definitely intense in every term of the game but the latter managed to outperform in unimaginable ways.
Red Wings went into the series being a favourite team due to having one of the best defensive line-ups in the league. Nashville shocked the world when they eliminated Detroit in just five games after Red Wings managed to win only one game.
Nashville and Detroit were tied after two games and heading back to the Joe Louis Arena, Red Wings were expected to continue winning as they ended the 2011-2012 NHL regular season with the best record at home, but fell short in both contests and were ousted
in Game 5.
"Right now, your thoughts aren't really there," Red Wings defenseman, Niklas Kronwall, said. "Right now it's just an empty feeling. Very disappointed, not only myself but the way our team started the game. We have to be a lot better than that, show a lot
more pride than that.''
The power play was just shocking for Detroit as they at one point in Game 4 against Nashville, failed to capitalise on six of seven chances and had only one goal with the extra skater on board despite being a tough team to tackle with the added man.
"One thing about it is we're going to have lots of time and we'll be able to get it figured out what we need to do because I don't think we're very interested in scratching and clawing to make the playoffs. That's never been the approach we've had. We like
to win," Detroit coach, Mike Babcock, said.
The offseason for Detroit now will be one to ponder on as they need to rebuild in each and every aspect and prepare for the upcoming season. But before that, let’s take a look at how each game played out.
Game 1
Staying consistent ultimately helped Nashville as they scored a goal in each of the three period while Detroit stayed behind with two goals in the last 40 minutes, allowing Nashville an easy 3-2 win.
Game 2
As soon as Detroit took over an early lead as Ian White and Cory Emmerton scored in the opening 20 minutes while Johan Franzen secured it in the next period. Red Wings levelled the series and had everything right on plan as the series headed to the Joe Louis
Arena for Game 3.
Game 3
Detroit defence fell apart yet again as Nashville scored in each of the three period to edge Red Wings, 3-2.
Game 4
With Red Wings needing to tie or be put on the verge of elimination, Detroit did not show any resistance at all, especially in the third period as Nashville scored three in the final 20 minutes alone, winning 3-1.
Game 5
Detroit failed to make any solid attempts on Predators’ goalie, Pekka Rinne, and Nashville cruised to a 2-1 win and advanced into round-two.
