Detroit Red Wings acquire Kyle Quincey from Tampa Bay Lightning for future pick -NHL Update
Kyle Quincey made a comeback to his original draft team in Detroit as the Red Wings acquired the young defenseman to add a little youth on the veteran filled team from the Tampa Bay Lightning for future draft picks on Tuesday, February 21, 2012.
Quincey was picked up by Detroit Red Wings as the 132nd overall draft pick during round-four of the 2003 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft and spent three straight seasons with them and their minor league club, the Grand Rapids Griffins,
before joining Los Angeles Kings and finally Colorado Avalanche.
The 26-year-old was acquired by Detroit in a surprising three way deal as Tampa Bay Lightning acquired the player earlier in the day by trading forward, Steve Downie, to Colorado Avalanche for him and then dealing him to Red Wings for a draft pick.
The draft pick seemed to be valuable for Tampa Bay in order to bring on some new talent onto the team. Detroit’s draft pick is reported to be a first round one in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
For Detroit Red Wings, Quincey is a befitting addition which they plan on grooming to become a leader in the upcoming seasons as various players near retirement.
"We like the addition of Quincey," Red Wings general manager, Ken Holland, told the Detroit Free Press. "He's a guy who can play 20 minutes a night, he can play right defense, left defense, he can play in all situations. He can man a point on the second
power-play unit. We believe this makes us deeper for the playoffs, and he's not a rental."
Being back on a team that is certainly on its way to a Stanley Cup championship this time around due to the solid performance they have shown so far, Kyle Quincey is also hoping for a ring around his finger after failing to get one back in 2008 due to being
an extra player on the club.
"I hope I can get my own this year for sure," said Quincey during a teleconference with reporters prior to their game against Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.
So far this season, Quincey has 23 points (5 goals, 18 assists) in 54 games played.
