Detroit Red Wings barely manage to hold off Dallas Stars 5-4 -NHL Update
Detroit’s consistent shooting throughout the 60 minute contest allowed them to stay ahead till the end and hold off Dallas as Red Wings edged the Stars, 5-4, on Tuesday night, January 3, 2012, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, United States.
The Red Wings are now on a two-game winning streak as they managed to shutout the St. Louis Blues, 3-0, in their previous matchup on Saturday and now the Dallas Stars in a close call.
Valtteri Filppula played top notch in their Tuesday night contest as the young centre player picked up three points (1 goal, 2 assists), which helped in keeping his team strong throughout.
"We've done well at home, but haven't been able to play as well on the road", Filppula said. "It's a good question. We try to prepare the same as at home but it hasn't been working out. It's not easy to win anywhere. Home teams come hard, so maybe that affects us as well".
Filppula got the opening goal of the first period for his 13th of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season nearly midway through, followed by Jiri Hudler at the 17:06 mark.
Loui Eriksson put Dallas on the board 50 seconds after Hudler’s 10th of the season followed by another Detroit goal as Hudler got his second of the night.
Jamie Benn potted the second of the night, while Cory Emmerton extended Detroit's lead.
Michael Ryder, the former Boston Bruins' veteran player, got the last goal for Dallas that could have brought them back but Johan Franzen’s 16th, a little over halfway through the second, settled the score for good.
"You never want to get down, especially against those guys", Jamie Benn said. "They're a good team, they play a solid game and we almost came back there but it just wasn't enough. I think we kept battling back. It shows our character, and I think we just ran out of time".
Detroit will definitely be looking for a third straight win when they face-off against Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, while Dallas Stars will go up against Nashville Predators on Thursday.
