Detroit Red Wings completely manhandle and destroy Minnesota Wild 6-0 -NHL Update
Detroit manhandled Minnesota and completely destroyed any confidence and motivation they might have had entering Friday night’s matchup as Red Wings thrashed Wild in a 6-0 shutout at the sold-out Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan, United States.
It was definitely hard for Minnesota fans to watch their favourite team be completely treated like a bunch of people who have never ever played the sport going up against a team full of Wayne Gretzky’s.
For Minnesota head coach, Mike Yeo, there might be very few such instances where he might have felt a little embarrassed to be standing behind his bench, but this was certainly that time.
"We gave them the first two goals and then put ourselves in a real tough spot," Yeo said. "We didn't respond well after that, and they felt pretty good about the way things were going. That's too good of a team to let them feel that way. We were chasing
all game and we didn't have the legs, but with that said we lost our heads. We didn't play well."
Despite a great start to the season where Minnesota was seen in the top positions of the Western Conference, the Wild are now number 12 with 66 points. Each and every game is crucial if they hope to make it above that playoff line but with three straight
losses now, it is not easy imagining them there.
Valtteri Filppula and Brendan Smith got two for Detroit in the opening period. The first 35 seconds into the contest and Smith’s first of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season at 16:04.
Darren Helm widened the gap to 3-0 nearly midway through the second and Valtteri Filppula picked up his second and final of the night with Ian White rebounding with another goal a little over a minute later.
Henrik Zetterberg capped it off with Detroit’s sixth straight of the night, confusing Minnesota to the point of no return in the third and final period of regulation.
"Making sure you're following the puck at the other end, but [I've] got to give props to the guys," Detroit goalie, Jimmy Howard, said. "They got a lot on [Harding] quick and we played our half-ice game most of the night.''
Detroit does not look to be slowing down any time soon as they host Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday.
Minnesota Wild might have it tough rebounding when they go against a uncompromising Colorado Avalanche team the same day.
