Detroit Red Wings cruise to third straight dominating Calgary Flames 5-3 -NHL Match Update
Detroit denied Calgary a comeback for their third straight win to improve to the sixth number spot in the Western Conference with 25 points as the Red Wings cruised to their third straight victory over the Flames, 5-3, Wednesday night, November 23, 2011,
at the sold-out Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan, United States.
After finally winning a match that Calgary could say they played well and earned, the Flames lost their second straight after a disappointing loss to the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets, 4-1, earlier on Monday and now to the Detroit Red Wings.
At the moment, Calgary is sitting at the 13th number spot with 17 points, just above the Anaheim Ducks who have 16.
The start of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season might not have been the best for the Red Wings, but it finally looks as if they are back on track.
"Obviously some energy and some excitement," Red Wings' coach Mike Babcock said. "When he starts feeling it, suddenly he's better, the team's better, the line mates are better and it's good to be around. He's jumping now and got some excitement in him."
Tomas Holmstrom scored his second of the season, 6:14, into the opening period while taking advantage of their first power play opportunity with Calgary down a player as Derek Smith was penalised for cross checking with a minor penalty.
Jarome Iginla added Calgary’s first to signal a comeback only 44 seconds into the second period while Brendan Morrison made the tie-breaker nearly two minutes later and gave the visitors a one point lead.
Ian White broke the Flames momentum and equalised the score with his first of the night nat the 7:38 mark.
Tomas Holmstrom added another to once again give the home team, which was followed by Olli Jokinen for Calgary’s last.
"(Holmstrom) is so good at screening the goalie and standing in front of the net," Lidstrom said. "That shot's not hitting the net because I can't get it on net because there was a guy trying to block it, so I'm shooting it wide hoping he can get a stick
on it.”
Pavel Datsyuk potted the third straight power play goal, while Valtteri Filppula added another nearly a minute later to take the match.
