Detroit Red Wings extending home win record with 23rd straight over San Jose Sharks 3-2 -NHL Update
Detroit has kept the momentum alive and running with their National Hockey League (NHL) record setting 23rd consecutive win over San Jose as the Red Wings edged Sharks, 3-2, on Sunday night, February 19, 2012, at the sold-out Joe Louis Arena in
Detroit, Michigan, United States.
The Red Wings are hoping to continue the home winning streak along with the regulation ones as well as Detroit grabbed their sixth straight overall win, staying perfect in their six-game home stand which began with a 4-2 defeat of the Edmonton Oilers.
"It's pretty amazing," said Detroit forward, Drew Miller. "[The old record of 20] was around for so long. We got a couple games past it, so it's going to be pretty tough to touch it."
San Jose was not coming into the matchup with any hope seeing how Detroit had been performing these past few days while the Sharks had already lost their previous two against Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes.
The upcoming games will be a test for the Red Wings as they have to play on the road, the next being against Chicago Blackhawks, but seeing the level of confidence in the Detroit line-up, it seems like nothing can really stop them right now.
"You see signs [now] and we'll probably see even more signs next game, so we want to keep winning," said Red Wings’, Henrik Zetterberg. "In the same way, we need points. We need to win games. If we want to win our division, we have to win our home games."
Zetterberg scored the first of the night for his 13th goal of the 2011-2012 NHL regular season at the 6:30 mark in the opening period while Drew Miller extended the lead midway through the second.
San Jose rookie, Logan Couture, followed up on the power play as Jonathan Ericsson was called for interference, but Darren Helm’s insurance shot at 7:01 in the third gave Detroit the much needed one point lead as the Sharks failed to add anymore in the five
minutes that remained after Patrick Marleau’s 23rd.
The Sharks continue their up-until-now disappointing losing streak on the road against Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday.
