Detroit Red Wings forward Danny Cleary likely to be out for week -NHL Update
Detroit Red Wings right winger, Danny Cleary, took a big hit during their game against Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan, which is expected to have him likely out for a week or more due to it.
After being examined by the medical staff, the hit turned out to have aggravated his knee further, which was already suffering from inflammation and has been nagging him for quite a while now.
Cleary left the game during the second period after Edmonton Oilers’ Ben Eager struck him into the sideboards, forcing him straight onto the ice and being helped out by teammates to the benches.
It has been learned that his knee will need to be drained due to fluid build up because of a baker’s cyst, which is caused behind the knee and results in severe pain along with stiffness and can be caused due to random incidences, which is most likely to
be the hit in this case.
After the drainage, Cleary will require an injection, which is expected to force him to stay out of the game for at least a week or even more depending on his condition afterwards.
"Danny Cleary’s gonna get an injection [on Thursday] or whatever and will be out a few days anyway," Detroit Red Wings head coach, Mike Babcock, said. "He's in pain. He doesn't seem to be able to play with it. I don't think it's anything serious, but it
gives [rookie Jan Mursak] a chance to get in the line up."
Cleary was not able to continue playing in the game but was a major contributor to their 4-2 comeback victory against the Edmonton Oilers, who had edged them just two games ago at their own stadium.
Drafted as the 13th overall pick during round-one of the 1997 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by Chicago Blackhawks, he is currently playing in his seventh straight season with the Detroit Red Wings.
So far in the 2011-2012 regular season, Danny Cleary has 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists) in the past 55 games he has played in.
