Detroit Red Wings give chance to forward Fabian Brunnstrom to pro tryout contract –NHL News Update
Fabian Brunnstrom might not have had any good luck in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the past three seasons as he has tried to perform and impress teams around the league, but got his prayers answered on Tuesday, August 16, as Detroit Red Wings offered
him a professional tryout contract for the upcoming season.
Detroit assistant general manager, Jim Nill, expressed his thoughts on giving Brunnstrom another chance at major league hockey, saying that it is purely based on how he will be able to outperform the competition.
"It's about competition, and if he comes in and plays better than someone else, we'll find a place (for him)", Wings' assistant GM Jim Nill told a local newspaper about the teams decision to sign on Brunnstrom. "Things probably haven't gone as he would have
liked, but this is an opportunity".
Three years ago, the same player was picked up by Detroit, not through an entry draft, but rather through talent scouts that had travelled all over the world in search of the greatest foreign hockey players. Brunnstrom was one of them, but instead of being
signed on, he was traded to Dallas and signed on for two seasons.
A native of Jonstorp, Sweden, Brunnstrom played four consecutive seasons with various Swedish teams and outperformed a number of players. He was signed on by Dallas Stars for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons, but failed to impress and ended up as an unrestricted
free agent.
In total, Brunnstrom has played 99 NHL games in which he managed to pot only 40 points (19 goals, 21 assists), a record which might seem common, but seeing it come from a top prospect is a whole different story.
"The big thing is consistency, we want to see consistency out of him", Nill added. "He understands now what it takes to be a pro at this level. He maybe didn't understand that coming out of Sweden”.
Knowing that this is most probably his last chance to make it on with a major league franchise, Brunnstrom will have to give everything he has got in order to land a position on one of the NHL’s most coveted teams, Red Wings.
