Detroit Red Wings hopeful of ripe prospect with late pick in 2011 NHL Entry Draft
According to Detroit Red Wings, it has learned over the seasons when the time came for the entry draft, having a late pick in the selection process has allowed it to get a ripe prospect which turns out better for Detroit later on.
Red Wings has the same thing in mind come Friday when the 2011 NHL Entry Draft begins.
Detroit believes that no draft pick will perform better for them immediately than it already is.
"Whomever we pick, he's going to be three to five years away from realistically helping us on the NHL level", said Red Wings' general manager, Ken Holland, about his 24th pick in the first round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. "It's not like we have
one of the top picks”.
Without a doubt, Detroit is one of the best and consistent National Hockey League (NHL) franchises out there.
Its last playoff entry in the previous postseason was its 20th straight, which just goes to show how committed it is to keeping regularity in its performance.
"There's a reason a player is still available at 24. We think we're going to get a good prospect, but he's going to need to develop quite a bit. Hopefully a few years from now, we'll find out we found a player in the draft", GM Ken Holland added about his
late pick in the draft.
Another aspect of Holland’s strategy for picking a player to induct him into his team is that he must be good at whatever position he plays.
Whether he is a defenseman, goalie or forward, he has to be a consistent player who is willing to develop before going main stream.
Jimmy Howard, Detroit's current main goalie, is a perfect example of its ideology that certainly does exemplify the strategy.
Howard was picked as the 64th overall in the second round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and remained with his university team up until the beginning of 2005 when Detroit finally gave him a chance.
Since then, he has remained the go-to goalie for them because he developed as a player first.
