Detroit Red Wings’ left winger Gustav Nyquist looking to improve in minor leagues during lockout
Gustav Nyquist, a Swedish international ice hockey player, who is one of the upcoming National Hockey League (NHL) players and currently associated with Detroit Red Wings in the league, would be looking to improve his skills and the game as he plays in the
minor leagues during lockout.
The 23-year-old player, who had a great season with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League (AHL), had to leave it in the middle as he was called by the Red Wings in the NHL. But now he would have a chance to complete the incomplete job that
he left last season and take full advantage of the minor league.
The clash between NHL and NHL Players’ Association and the cancellation of pre-season and first three weeks of the season has resulted in most of the NHL players moving towards Europe in the Swedish, Finnish and Russian leagues whereas some players are joining
the teams in the minor leagues.
The Halmstad, Sweden native has been assigned to play for Grand Rapids Griffin and their management and the officials would be looking at him very closely, hoping he would improve and get better.
The General Manager of the Red Wings, Ken Holland made it clear that if the player is able to show the performance which he showed last year, then it would be made clear by the player that his previous performance was not a fluke and he has got potential
and talent to be one of the best scorers in the world, as he said,
"If Gus repeats last season, or starts out as the leading scorer -- it's one thing to do something once, if you do it twice, it shows you're not a one-year wonder. It's who you are."
Holland also added,
"If you're a winger and you want to play in the NHL, you've got to shoot the puck. You need to have the other team know you're going to shoot the puck. Gus has got a hockey IQ at the top of the chart. He plays hard, is determined, back-checks. We think he
can be a top-six forward. But you've got to think shoot."
