Detroit Red Wings looking for a trade with Calgary Flames to avail services of Jay Bouwmeester
Having failed to get services of any top defenseman, Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL) are interested in bringing Jay Bouwmeester of Calgary Flames to their team.
There have been speculations that veteran defenseman and alternate captain of the Flames might be traded and will leave Calgary, Alberta based side. 28-year-old player is the only option left for Detroit Red Wings to strengthen their blue line as there are
not many defensemen left in the free agency so trade is the only option left for Detroit, Michigan based side.
Edmonton, Alberta, born player’s presence on Calgary’s roster became unnecessary when they signed St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, Florida Panthers and Washington Capitals player, Dennis Wideman few months back.
Whereas Detroit Red Wings are desperately in a need for a defenseman after their legendary player Nicklas Lidstrom left their team and retired after serving them for more than 20 years. Another of their defensemen, Bras Stuart also was traded to San Jose
Sharks, making him short of players at the blue line.
The only problem for Red Wings is that Bouwmeester is paid very high by Calgary Flames as he had signed a five-year contract for $33 million back in 2009, which means that he has a cap hit of $6.6 million. But their need for a defenseman might be a bigger
problem if do not sign him.
Same is the reason why Calgary Flames would like to let him go, off load their roster and reduce their expenditures.
The 6-foot-4, 215 pounder defenseman, who previously played for Florida Panthers, started his professional career 14 years back with Medicine Hat Tigers in Western Hockey League (WHL), before making his NHL debut with Panthers in 2002-2003 season.
He played for Sunrise, Florida, based side in six seasons and in last four of those six seasons, he did not miss a single regular season game, playing all 82 games. The Canadian international who won 2003 and 2004 World Championships with Team Canada, joined
Calgary Flames in 2009 and has not missed a single regular season game for them as well. His NHL games count has reached 717 and he has scored 65 goals, 220 assists for a total of 285 points.
