Detroit Red Wings’ public address announcer, Hockey Hall of Famer Budd Lynch dies at the age of 95
Budd Lynch, a public address announcer of Detroit Red Wings and Hockey Hall of Famer, died at the age of 95 in Wyandotte, Michigan on Tuesday.
Windsor, Ontario native started his radio commentary career after he got out of high school but he had to leave it to participate in the World War 2 as a volunteer. Lynch was a part of infantry unit there, which was Canadian Army's Essex Scottish Regiment.
Shortly after the invasion of Normandy in 1944, he lost of one his arms as he was hit by a rocket.
In 1949, Lynch was doing the job on a radio, as he did the commentary on the matches of Windsor Spitfires but Detroit Red Wings’ general manager Jack Adams asked him to join their organisation.
Detroit Red Wings’ best era was the time when he first joined them as a public address announcer. The team won in the very first season and won 4 titles in five years from 1950 to 1955.
In all Lynch saw Red Wings winning 8 Stanley Cup titles during his time and did the job for 60 long years, for which he surely would not be forgotten by the fans and the team.
The owner of Detroit Red Wings, Mike Ilitch was sad and paid a tribute to the announcer in his words, hailing his services for the team. According to Ilitch, Red Wings have lost a great contributor, who was a legendary icon for their organisation because
his voice made all the Detroit fans so excited and they enjoyed the match more he was there. The owner also praised deceased’s personality as he mentioned that he always had a smile on face and spark in voice. Ilitch said,
"Budd Lynch was a dear member of the Detroit Red Wings family and legendary icon of our community. Hearing Budd's voice on the radio and over the public address at Joe Louis Arena was something that every Red Wings fan looked forward to and loved. His calm,
friendly and distinguished voice was symbolic of who Budd was as a person. He always had a smile on his face, an upbeat spark in his voice and a kind and encouraging word for everyone he met”.
