Detroit Red Wings rally early to extend Anaheim Ducks losing streak 4-2 -NHL Match Update
Detroit moved up in the Western Conference while Anaheim continues to struggle at the 14 number spot with only 16 points as the Red Wings extended the Ducks losing streak after rallying early in the match, 4-2, Sunday night, November 20, 2011, at the sold-out
Honda Center in Anaheim, California, United States.
The Californian arena faced a power outage due to a rainstorm in the southern part of the state, which delayed the game for nearly 27 minutes, but it did not let the Detroit Red Wings lose focus of what they wanted.
Henrik Zetterberg scored in the opening two minutes of the opening period for his fourth of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season to give the visitors an early lead in the contest.
Johan Franzen fired off his 10th only 14 seconds into the second period while Brad Stuart extended their lead even further nearly seven minutes later.
"It was a big win, but I think we would have drawn it up a little differently," Stuart said. "We got off to a good start and kind of let them back in it, but Howard was big for us and made some big saves. We got some good penalty kills and were able to hold
on.”
After Detroit’s third straight, Anaheim finally realised that they had a lot of catching up to do and started shooting at every opportunity they got.
"They were coming hard," Detroit goalie, Jimmy Howard said. "They don't stop. They got a real hard-working team over there. They take pucks to the net and they crash. They make the goaltender's life tough, but our guys did a good job of boxing out and helping
me clear out rebounds.”
Saku Koivu and Teemu Selanne scored two straight in the final moments of the second period to put Anaheim back in the matchup as they entered the third 20 minute round but as Stuart potted his second of the night at the 19:12 mark, the Ducks and the 17,000
plus crowd realised that it was the end and not point in fighting.
Detroit will be playing their next game at home against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday while the Ducks, hoping to snap a four-game losing streak, have the next against the Phoenix Coyotes.
