Detroit Red Wings re-sign third line goalie Joey MacDonald –NHL offseason Update
Detroit Red Wings confirmed their second backup goalie to Jimmy Howard, by signing Joey MacDonald to a two-year, two-way contract, on Monday, which will pay him different amounts based on where he plays.
MacDonald signed a two-way contract which will be him playing in either the National Hockey League (NHL) with Detroit Red Wings, or their farm team in the American Hockey League (AHL), Grand Rapids. He will earn $550,000 in the first season in the major
league and $105,000 for playing in the minor one.
The second season is a one-way deal in the NHL for $550,000.
Detroit Red Wings general manager, Ken Holland, was happy in announcing the decision, which he believes will be beneficial for the team.
"He gives us good depth, gives us good insurance", Detroit GM Ken Holland said.
The 31-year-old veteran goalie will be entering his seventh NHL season in October, and his second with Detroit. Prior to joining the NHL, MacDonald playing in the AHL with Grand Rapids, and was eventually picked up by the major league team.
MacDonald has also played with Boston Bruins, New York Islanders and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Last season, he appeared in 15 matchups and maintained a save percentage of .917 and 2.58 goals against average record.
Detroit management now only has one more deal to make, and that is either re-signing Chris Osgood as their second goalie to Jimmy Howard or finding a new one. Up until now, Red Wings have been looking for a new and fresh face, which would likely result in
Osgood retiring. If their search does not bring about a new goalie, it is possible that they will return Osgood.
Their main goalie, Jimmy Howard, was re-signed to the team in February to a two-year contract worth an estimated $4.5 million. According to GM Ken Holland, he is planning on contacting Osgood later on this week and will eventually announce whether the team
will be keeping the 38-year-old or if they will be letting him go.
Looking at the free agency, not many choices are there that fit the requirements of Detroit’s perfect goalie. They will have to settle down with Osgood until further slots open up.
