Detroit Red Wings sign 2nd round pick of 2011 draft Slovakian forward Tomas Jurco –NHL Update
Detroit Red Wings of the Eastern Division of National Hockey League (NHL) signed their 35th overall pick of the 2011 NHL Draft, Slovakia’s Tomas Jurco in an entry-level contract for three years.
The 19-year-old forward is one of the players that Red Wings’ general manager Ken Holland is very excited to have, obviously because of the extreme talent that he possesses.
Jurco is a very young player who has been proving his talent from a very early age as he started his career at the age of 16 and had a great first season.
The 6 feet 2 inches tall right winger joined Saint John Sea Dogs of Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in 2009-2010 season and played 64 games in the first season and made an instant impact by scoring more than 50 points. He scored 26 goals and 25 assists
for total of 51 points.
Second season was even better for Kosice, Slovakia born right winger as he scored five points more than the first season. The number of assists he scored was the same as he scored in the first season but the number of goals he scored increased. With 31 goals
and 25 assists, his total points in second season climbed to 56. He also represented Slovakia under-20 team in world junior championships in the same season but scored just one point in six matches.
But the most phenomenal and turning point of his career was 2011-2012 season in which he scored amazing 68 points in just 48 games, with 30 goals and 38 assists. The 6-foot-2, 187 pounder, also scored 8 points in World Junior Championships with one goal
and seven assists.
Talking about Jurco, Ken Holland had only good things to say as he said,
“We like his skill level. He’s had a good junior career. There’s a development process to get him from being a real talented player to a productive NHL player”.
The 56-year-old manager also added,
“It is harder to get the puck when you play pro than it is in junior. Gotta get stronger. But certainly, he’s a good skater, he’s got good skill. He’s got real good potential. We think he’s got a future to, one day, be an NHL player.”
