Detroit Red Wings sign 2nd round pick of entry draft Martin Frk for three years –NHL Update
Martin Frk, a Czech Republic international hockey player and right winger, who was selected 49th overall in the second round of the 2012 NHL draft by Detroit Red Wings, has now been given an entry-level, three-year contract by the same organisation.
19-year-old Frk has played most of the hockey for Czech Republic international junior under-18 and under-20 hockey teams and few seasons in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He has even represented Czech Republic in the under-18 and under-20 World
junior hockey championships.
The 6-foot-0 and 203 pounder, Czech forward started his career with HC Karlovy Vary U18 in Czech Republic’s junior hockey league and kept shifting to their under-18 and under-20 hockey teams for four years. In 2010-2011 he joined Halifax Mooseheads in the
QMJHL and played for them for two years before signing with Red Wings in the NHL.
In 2010-2011 season he was featured in World Junior Championship of under-18 and played six games, scoring one goal and four assists for total of five points. He also featured in Junior Championship of under-20, in which he played six games, scoring three
goals, three assists for total of six points.
His turning point in the career surely was when he signed with Halifax Mooseheads of QMJHL, where he had a great first season in which he scored 50 points in just 62 games, 22 of which were goals and 28 were assists. Whereas in the second season he could
not play as many games he played in the first season but his average of points per game was even better as he scored 16 goals, 13 assists and 29 total points in 34 games.
Dominique Ducharme, head coach of Halifax Mooseheads was happy for him and hoped that Detroit Red Wings move will be good for the player which played under him two seasons. Ducharme said,
"It was a tough season with injuries and stuff, so to see him get drafted by Detroit was something good for him and the fact he's getting a contract right away shows how much confidence they have in him.
Ken Holland, general manager of the Detroit Red Wings also talked good about the player and told that they liked him when he came to their camp. It was his young age and what they saw in Traverse City that made their mind to sign him and they have been watching
him for some years as Holland said,
"He came to camp and our guys liked him in Traverse City. He competes hard and has a good shot and he has one year of junior remaining and then he’s pro eligible. So based upon his age, based upon what we saw in Traverse and what our scouts have seen out
of him the last couple of years, we decided to sign him to a contract."
