Detroit Red Wings still in the lookout for a defenseman -NHL Update
Whatever may happen, the Detroit Red Wings are fixated on adding a defenseman before the 2012-2013 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season kicks off, that is if a lockout does not come into play and a new labour deal is set to run before then.
At the moment, there is not a player which Detroit can term to be going for specifically, whether in the free agency or by trading, but Red Wings are determined to get it over with before the season starts. With the retirement of Nicklas Lidstrom, Red Wings
captain and top defender, the team has had to face a huge deficit in that department.
Detroit also lost a top level defenseman, Brad Stuart, who decided to sign on with the San Jose Sharks instead, widening the gap even further for a team that is mostly dependant on its defensive power.
Not just one defenseman, but Detroit could be picking up two to add that much needed extra depth.
“We're talking to a few people,'' Red Wings general manager, Ken Holland, said, according to mlive.com. “There's some veteran defensemen looking for an opportunity. We need to sign another defenseman, maybe two.”
Not only is the Detroit Red Wings club determined to get someone added before the new season kicks off, but it may just be before the expiration date of the current collective bargaining agreement, which is September 15th.
It is believed that the Detroit Red Wings made an offer to Carlo Colaiacovo, worth an impressive $2.5 million for the upcoming season along with expressing their interest in Michal Rozsival, Brett Clark and Mark Eaton.
There is no certainty at the moment in regards to whether the new CBA will have a major affect on how the salary caps range for various teams around the league since a number of players are asking for just too much money. A new deal could mean a lowered
salary cap and less to pay for the Detroit Red Wings.
A deal before the September 15th deadline could happen, but it is most likely that Detroit will initiate something after a new CBA comes into effect.
