Detroit Red Wings takedown Edmonton Oilers 4-2 inaugurating home stand -NHL Update
Red Wings returned back home for the first time since January 25, 2012, and inaugurated their six-game home stand in a big way as Detroit took down the Edmonton Oilers, 4-2, after losing to them in a shootout on the road, Wednesday night, February 2, at
the sold-out Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
Detroit finally managed to snap their two-game losing streak which was becoming embarrassing for them being the top rated team in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season with 74 points, above the Eastern Conference leaders, New York Rangers.
Edmonton got a huge boost in confidence by beating the top team in the league in their last matchup, but felt their wrath this time around as Detroit was not bound on losing no matter what.
"The way we responded to coming back and getting ourselves tied was almost fool's gold, because we thought we'd done enough," said Edmonton coach, Tom Renney, coaching his first game since getting hit with the puck. "Clearly you don't ever do enough against
Detroit until you beat them. I'm not happy with it. I don't like what I saw and I'm not happy with the way we put the effort in tonight. We gave a great team an opportunity to be even greater."
Johan Franzen kicked off the scoring with his 21st of the regular season during their first power play opportunity with Eric Belanger on the benches due to a minor penalty.
Cory Emmerton gave Detroit their second straight goal to extend the lead while Edmonton’s Sam Gagner finally put the Oilers on the scoreboard with his 12th of the regular season.
Gagner came out strong in the third and final period of regulation by adding their second straight on a power play opportunity, levelling the game and giving off the impression that Edmonton would be taking the match once again.
Luckily for Detroit, Drew Miller and Henrik Zetterberg fired off two more nearly four minutes apart to seal victory for the NHL’s top level team.
Detroit Red Wings are hoping for some better luck at home as they host Anaheim Ducks on Friday while Edmonton has one more on the road against Ottawa Senators.
