Detroit Red Wings unable to comeback against San Jose Sharks in game 7
The Red Wings came up with a superb performance against the San Jose Sharks in the semi-final series. The Red Wings were down and out from the looks of it, as they trailed the Sharks 3-0 at one stage.
However, they came up with a fighting performance that witnessed them winning the next three games to take the series into the seventh game. The Red Wings had an opportunity to win the game and in doing so they would become only the fourth team to win after
falling behind 3-0 in the series.
Unfortunately, the Sharks got off to a flying start with the home ice advantage and scored two goals to get into the driving seat.
The Red Wings gave all they had left in tank but in the end, it was the Sharks, who won the game 3-2, and won the series to book a spot for themselves in the Western Conference Finals.
"It's tough to realize the season's over, especially when we believe in the room we could have done something really good this year", forward Henrik Zetterberg said. "We had a good team and had a good feeling".
The Sharks were definitely the stronger of the two teams during the first period, as they outshot their competitors 17-11 and also bagged two goals with Logan Couture and Devin Setoguchi scoring the goals.
The Sharks were really struggling on the power-plays in the last three games, as they failed to score any goals on the last 10 power-plays. This time out, the Sharks were much better as they scored a goal on the very first power-play through Setoguchi.
The second goal of the game would be the most disappointing from the Red Wings point of view, as the goal was conceded with only 59 seconds of play left.
Second period proved to be much better for the Red Wings, as they came out strong on the attacks and successfully scored through Zetterberg to keep hopes of a comeback alive.
Several players in the Red Wings line-up were going out due to injuries but they still ended the period on a high with 17 shots on goal, compared to six, made by the Sharks.
The final period saw the Sharks scoring a goal through Patrick Marleau to get into a comfortable 3-1 lead. The Red Wings also managed to score a goal to cut the lead to one goal only, but by this time the Sharks defence was rock solid.
They let their lead slip on several occasions during the last three games but held onto it in the important game that saw them winning the game 4-3 in the end. Resultantly, the Sharks won the series and move to the Western Conference Finals where they will
be up against the Vancouver Canucks.
