Detroit Red Wings wins 2-1 against Edmonton Oilers in a nerve-wrecking match during overtime
Detroit Red Wings played host to the struggling Edmonton Oilers at the Joe Louis Arena this past Friday. The game was pretty much one sided on papers and it was expected to be one sided high scoring win for Red Wings.
Oilers, on the other hand, were hopeful for a good display and intended to notch up a win to cause another upset during the season.
The game started off with both teams coming up with some decent plays. Oilers stunned the crowd with an early first period goal which remained till the end of the period.
The second period was a hard fought contest which was mostly dominated by Red Wings but they couldn’t find the back of the net.
However, much to the relief of the Red Wings’ fans, they scored to level the scores. The regulation time ended with the scores level and it was Red Wings who scored in overtime and won the game by 2-1.
Devan Dubnyk, goalkeeper of Oilers, was named the star of the game as he made 43 saves during the game.
Oilers were the stronger of the two teams when it came to the offence. With the passage of time, Oilers’ attacks intensified and their quick and pin point passing saw them getting past the opposing defence every now and then.
It was just a matter of time when they would score which they eventually did in the 7th minute. The goal was scored by Ryan Jones from a well placed flick shot. The period saw a few more shots on goal by both teams but they failed to find the
back of the end.
The period ended with Oilers leading 1-0. During the period, Oilers made 8 shots on goal while Red Wings made 6 shots on goal.
The second period started off with Oilers stringing a few shots on goal but Red Wings managed to take control of the game with the passage of time. Their play construction passing and shooting was absolutely brilliant.
However, Oilers defence didn’t show any vulnerability and didn’t allow any goals. The period ended with the Oiler still leading 1-0. During the period, Oilers made 10 shots on goal while Red Wings made 17 shots on goal.
The final period saw Red Wings dominating the 20 minutes of play and they scored in final minute of the game to level the scores.
The goal was scored by Nicklas Lidstrom from a powerful strike. The regulation time ended with the scores level on 1-1.
The game went into overtime where Red Wings scored through Pavel Datsyuk from a well placed shot to win the game 2-1 in the end.
