Detroit Red Wings wins 2-1 against the Minnesota Wild- NHL Updates
Another one of the important games of Sunday was the Minnesota Wild playing host to the Detroit Red Wings at the Excel Energy Centre.
Both teams played the 59th game of their respective season with the Wild wanting the win more so that they could make it into the play-offs.
The 889th game of the season which was one of the two games on the night that went into shootout saw goals in the final period which resulted in the teams being level at the end of the regulation time.
The game saw no goals during the overtime but Red Wings outscored the Wild in shootout to win the game 2-1 in the end.
Niklas Backstrom was named the star of the game for his 38 saves during the game.
Both teams made a decent start to the game which saw them making goal attempts and coming across scoring chances right from the start. Though the home team had problems early on and they lost possession, it wasn’t prolonged as the Wild were able change their
strategy and come up with attacks.
The play-making of both teams was fabulous during the course of the period that created chances of the teams regular.
However, with the passage of time both teams started to near the goal and it looked as if a goal would surely be scored. Unfortunately, this didn’t happen during the course of the entire period as the 20 minutes of play ended goalless.
During the course of the period, the Red Wings made 13 goal attempts while the Wild made 8 goal attempts.
The second period saw the defence of both teams step up their game and cut down the attacks. There were several chances for both teams that could have seen them scoring but the defence was solid during the second period.
Not only this, but the defence was very supportive while going on the attacks. The chances that came and the shots that were attempted were rare and difficult to score from.
However, the period ended with the scores still level on 0-0. During the second period, the Wild made 5 goal attempts while the Red Wings made 8 goal attempts.
The final period saw both teams attacking right from the start once again. Resultantly, the Red Wings scored the first goal of the game in the second minute with Nicklas Lidstrom scoring from a powerful strike.
It looked as if the game was destined to finish level on scores as the Wild scored in the 5th minute through Martin Havlat from a well placed flick shot. Both teams continued to attack and there were several shots every now and then and from everywhere
on ice.
The period didn’t see any further goals with the Wild making 11 goal attempts in the final period while the Red Wings made 14 goal attempts.
The game went into overtime as a result of the scores level on 1-1 at the end of the regulation time. No goals were scored during overtime so the game went into overtime.
Todd Bertuzzi’s goal proved to be the winning shot of the shootout as he was playing his 1000th game in the National Hockey League.
