Detroit Tiger lose 1-5 to New York Yankees, fall six back – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers fell six back as they lost to New York Yankees 1-5 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday, June 3 in the decisive finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
After having a forgettable time during their road trip, Tigers were hoping to restore some of the lost pride in front of their home crowd. Credit must be given to Jim Leyland and company for fighting back in second game to level series at 1-1 but despite having the winning momentum on their side, the Tigers were unable to find winning ways on Sunday’s evening.
Ace Justin Verlander has also looked a lot more beatable lately. The 2011 American League Most Valuable Player Award winner, Verlander was unable to use his fastballs effectively. Allowing four runs on nine hits in just over six innings, he took his fourth loss of the season.
Derek Jeter provided the Yankees with an impressive start as he homered off Verlander in the first inning to put his team 1-0 ahead. Mark Teixeira also looked in decent touch, hitting a sacrifice fly to centre to score the second run for New York.
"Phil deserves all the credit. He was pretty impressive today," Jeter said in a post game interview. "He just came after people."
"Runs are few and far between when you're facing him, but we scored early there, and I think he struggled with his control a little bit, so he got his pitch count up," Jeter said with a big smile on his face.
Alex Rodriguez, who has been struggling to get hits off the plate since the start of the season, hit a mighty home run in third to put the Yankees in a commanding position.
Prince Fielder homered to right in the fourth to keep the Tigers in the game. However, apart from him none of Tigers’ hitters were able to score runs and the Yankees held on to their lead to win the series. Yankees’ starting pitcher Phil Hughes allowed just four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks to secure his fifth win of the season.
