Detroit Tigers 2012 regular season review – Part 58
The Detroit Tigers continued their superb form in the finale of a four match series against the Minnesota Twins as they cruised to a 7-3 win in Game 4 on July 5. Using their home conditions brilliantly at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, the Tigers secured
a comfortable to level up the series 2-2 and improve their record to 41-42.
Starting pitcher Rick Porcello looked completely out of sorts on the mound as he allowed 12 hits and three runs in just over three innings but he was fortunate to end up on the winning side. Relief pitchers Darin Downs and Octavio Dotel played a big part
in deciding the outcome of the clash as they combined to pitch four scoreless inning. Dotel grabbed his second win of the season and closer Jose Valverde tossed up the perfect ninth to help the Tigers hold on to their slim lead.
Twins’ starter Scott Diamond pitched seven sharp innings, giving up just five hits and two runs while striking out four batters. However, his strong effort was not enough to save the Twins from an embarrassing defeat.
"It's exciting. ... Miguel took a lot of the pressure off. I can't say enough about the way he played today," said Fielder about Cabrera, who was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
"Gosh, that was awesome. As soon as he hit it, I knew he got it. I was fired up," outfielder Quintin Berry said. "I was fired up that you could tell he's been putting some good swings on some balls and not getting anything from it, just barely missing them
and seeing him get that at that point, I'll take that all day."
Relief pitcher A.J. Burnett took the loss after he allowed two hits and three runs in 0.1 innings. After Twins took the early lead, third baseman Miguel Cabrera singled to left in the fourth inning to put Tigers on the board. Brennan Boesch and Cabrera combined
to level score 3-3 for the Tigers and slugger Prince Fielder smacked a three run home run in the eighth to ensure the Tigers reach home safely.
