Detroit Tigers' catcher Alex Avila out from lineup due to sprained jaw – MLB News
Detroit Tigers’ catcher Alex Avila will miss some potential time due to his sprained jaw after a collision with Prince Fielder.
Now Gerald Laird is coming to replace Avila as Tigers started their three-game series against the Oakland Athletics at Comerica Park.
"I got word just prior to the game that Alex was a total scratch for (Monday), He took batting practice. He actually swung pretty good, but he had a headache and didn't feel very well at all. He got a headache right away, and the trainer alerted me that he would not be available,” team manager Jim Leyland said of Avila who will be a key winning factor for them in the coming series.
Tigers’ skipper added with more confidence and explained in the media of Avila’s current health condition as he said, "He wasn't going to play under any circumstances, and I can't tell you about tomorrow. That's a real touchy one when you start messing with upstairs. I'll have to feel 100% that he's totally cleared before I would play him."
Avila was performing well in this Major League season with consistent .247 hitting average along with eight homers, 43 RBIs and .355 OBP.
His contribution to close down the winning percentage gap with the White Sox is huge. During the first half of the season, the Tigers were struggling to maintain their momentum but since the second half has been started, the Tigers’ performance is showing a consistent uphill thrust and this is also all about Avila’s persistent offensive game.
Avila with three-years of big league experience, also understands his significance for Tigers who are pushing hard to prevail to the post season.
On the other hand, the Tigers need some more spirited performances if they wanted to finish top in the American League Central Division.
Already the Tigers are competing hard with the Chicago White Sox with 78-69 win-loss and .531 winning percentage.
The White Sox however, going smooth with more persistent 81-66 win-loss and .551 winning percentage. Though the White Sox are showing some late spirited performances but still recognise the tough competition ahead with the Tigers.
