Detroit Tigers’ Alex Avila and Justin Verlander named to Sporting News’ annual All-Star team
Two young Detroit Tigers’ stars have once again impressed with their selection in Sporting News annual post-season All-Star team. Both Justin Verlander and Alex Avila were named in this year’s Sporting News’ All Star team on Thursday when majority of 289
players, 23 managers and 55 Major League executives voted in favour of them.
Verlander and Avila both performed tremendously throughout the 2011 MLB season and that is the main reason why they won this All Star selection. Both earned great acknowledgment from many baseball experts throughout the season and are now looking confident
to win more awards at the end of the year.
Winning this particular honour will also help Justin Verlander, who is overwhelmingly the favourite now to win this year’s American League (AL) Outstanding Picher of the Year in the Players’ choice awards and later Cy Young in Major League post-season awards
in November.
Verlander is also very optimistic regarding his chances of winning in this year’s MLB post-season awards and stated earlier that he is looking forward to the November awards and that he is pretty confident of grabbing the Cy Young award.
His pitching remained consistent and on the spot every time he came to threw. Verlander was not only influential in the regular season but he also performed tremendously in the post-season. His performance in the American League Championship Series against
the Texas Rangers also inspired many while he secured an overall 24-5 win loss record.
Tigers’ catcher Alex Avila, who is also named in the All Star team, had high expectations of winning in with his selection. His stats speak for him and need no appreciation further as he is already enjoying the media attention with full swing. Many believe
he will be a sure shot winner when the league will announce this year’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
He performed for the Tigers in 2011 like a superhero and earned 32 total throwing on runners’ average and .389 on base percentage was enough to make him a new emerging player. No other catcher from the American League stood tall against his total stats.
Avila’s performance in the past season is certainly suggesting as he has some enormous potential to become 2011 MLB MVP.
