Detroit Tigers’ Brandon Inge not happy with his situation – MLB News
At Detroit Tigers’ winter caravan at Comerica Park, Brandon Inge expressed his intentions at becoming a full time third baseman with the Tigers’ this season. The right handed infielder struggled to achieve decent results last season as he managed to hit only .197 average.
Considering his inconsistent performances, he was sent to the AAA League by the Tigers. The infielder is now looking to get another chance to prove his metal and change the course of his career. In an interview with a leading sports website, Inge stated that he has great love for baseball as it is the sport he has played his whole life. He further added that he is always looking to learn new skills to improve his game play.
However, the Tigers’ are not interested in offering Inge the third base position right now. After they signed a nine year $214 million contract with free agent Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera is expected to perform the third base duties for them. Inge will be waiting for his opportunity to arrive this season to cement his place as the third baseman.
Tigers’ manager, Jim Leyland has already made it clear that Cabrera will be taking on third baseman role fulltime this year and he is not expected to be pulled in for a defensive replacement.
"I'll make that perfectly clear today," Leyland said, before acknowledging the drop-off in defense from Inge to Cabrera. "He's not going to have the agility defensively most likely that Inge has, but you give up a little something, and you get a whole lot in return."
"I basically apologized that this got out in the airwaves, and I'm sorry that he had to hear it other than from the horse's mouth," Leyland said. "But at that particular time, I was not at any liberty to discuss this whatsoever, so I have talked to Brandon."
General manager Dave Dombrowski also encouraged Inge saying that he is an integral part of Detroit Tigers. The GM explained that the Tigers are trying to win the World Series this season and they will do everything to make Inge feel better.
