Detroit Tigers’ Bruce Rondon a rare talent – MLB News
Detroit Tigers’ Bruce Rondon is an extremely talented pitcher. Since making his debut with the Tigers’ Minor League system, Rondon has given impressive performance to impress the General Manager Dave Dombrowski.
Only if he can master the trick during his March audition that Justin Verlander and Joel Zumaya mastered in their rookie seasons in 2006, Rondon could be the next sensation in baseball. Dombrowski has indicated that he could use the young pitcher as a closer
during Spring Training camp.
If everything works out well for him, Rondon could make his Major League Baseball debut as early as May 2013. In some ways, he has an excellent chance to secure a permanent place on Tigers big league roster. With Jose Valverde also struggling to keep his
place on the roster, Rondon could be Tigers’ next permanent closer.
According to sources, the 21-year old can hit 100 mph on regular basis and walks a different route. He is fast and agile, which helps him cruise through the innings. Manager Jim Leyland also believes Rondon is a rare talent. A number of clubs have already
called up Dombrowski to talk about Rondon to trade him but the GM knows Rondon can prove to be an asset for the Tigers in the long term.
"He's a rare talent," Tigers’ president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said last week as he made clear Rondon will go to spring camp with a shot at grabbing Valverde's old job. "You would not believe the number of clubs that have called me about Bruce
Rondon to trade him.”
He added, "This guy is a special potential closer, with the makeup of a closer. Normally, you're not going to thrust that (job) in a young guy's hands and say, automatically, 'It's your job.' But it would not surprise me if he earned that job."
The reason why he has been so successful in the Minor League is simple; he can overpower the hitters. In the ninth inning, when teams try to create a chance to tie or rally for a win, nothing is more dramatic as a closer who can strike-out the batters. Rondon
can certainly do that. It will be interesting to see if the youngster can live to his immense potential in Spring Training.
