Detroit Tigers’ Dave Dombrowski is cautious over signing new players – MLB News
The Detroit Tigers’ General Manager and President Dave Dombrowski is very cautious over signing new players from the 2011 MLB free agency market. He was speaking to the media on Tuesday and commented on his observant attitude towards bringing new players
into the roster for next season.
Dombrowski said, “We’re still prepared, I don’t mean to say that we couldn’t make a move if the right move came about, but I wouldn’t think we would make a real quick move. I think we’ll take more time to go through it and let it work itself out. I don’t
think we’re going to be rushing out like we did last year.”
Since the free agent market has opened, the Tigers’ management has played their cards very carefully. They do not want any extra spending on those players that cannot play for them longer. According to many baseball experts, one or two years of relationship
with any franchise do not make any sense. Intelligent managements always sign players for more than two years as they will get along nicely with the environment of a new team and the playing style of that particular franchise.
The Tigers’ management also understands the last year’s practice which is now proving wonderful for them when they brought Victor Martinez and Joaquin Benoit into the Tigers’ roster as they signed four year deals with huge amount of money. The Tigers did
recognise the need that their team was lacking and made timely decisions on these two future prospects.
Now, Dombrowski and all the top executives of the Tigers franchise are looking very closely at the free agent market and thinking deeply as what will be the best decision for them. Either they are waiting for the right time to come or they are thinking beyond
this free agency period and trying to get involved with another team to make some trade.
Right now the Tigers will be looking to add a potential second baseman, backup catcher, a designated hitter and pitcher who will give little support to Justin Verlander if they want to excel in the league.
