Detroit Tigers’ Doug Fister declared the American League Pitcher of the Month – MLB News
The Detroit Tigers’ starter Doug Fister was declared the American League Pitcher of the Month on Thursday, September 29. Having five appearances in the month with four starts to his credit, Fister in his 34 innings, recorded 34 strike-outs and allowed just
three walks. His 0.53 ERA remained enviable for any starter in the Majors.
With a 1.79 ERA since he became a formal part of the Detroit Tigers on August 3, he has a record of 8-1 after he was leading the Seattle Mariners with a 3.33 ERA and a 3-12 record with the team.
“I have been having full season,” said Fister. Professionalism personified and with the talent that invariably comes with a player of such calibre, Doug Fister is full of humility and vows to struggle hard to do the best in his capacity.
“I think that's part of life, part of the game of baseball ... accepting what you have and where you can take it, knowing your limits and knowing within yourself what you have to be doing. It's kind of what we all kind of struggle for.”
Having played 32 games this season, he has an ERA of 2.83 with 146 strike-outs to his credit, having won 11 games. He has allowed 193 hits and 76 runs with a 1.06 WHIP. If nothing else, 2.83 speaks for itself on what the starter has done so far.
Fister has a simple explanation for it: “I've never thrown hard ... When I have tried to focus on getting strikeouts, it doesn't work for me.”
Having some of the best pitchers on the field, it will now be of immense interest for the Detroit Tigers’ fans to see who will have the next start when the team will confront the New York Yankees in the post-season game on Saturday, October 1.
It is a tremendous achievement for Fister to become the American League Pitcher of the Month. His hard work and competitive spirit has helped the Tigers make it to the post-season this year. It will be interesting to see what impact that he will have for
the Tigers in their series with the Yankees.
