Detroit Tigers’ Jhonny Peralta impresses Larry Bowa – MLB News
Larry Bowa says he has been very impressed by Tigers’ short-stop Jhonny Peralta, who made only seven errors during the 2011 MLB season.
Lawrence Robert Bowa ranks sixth in the all time list. He has been around for a long time and he has seen thousands of MLB games.
Bowa said, "The big thing I look at is routine plays. The great plays you make in one year can be counted on two hands. What I look at is whether you make the routine play when the ball is hit to you with the bases loaded. I watched Jhonny play this season.”
In an interview, Bowa commented on Jhonny’s brilliant efforts saying that he never tries to turn a double play when there is no option for it. He further explained that a lot of players try to do that without considering the situation or score. However,
Jhonny has this ability to analyse before making his decisions as he never tried for a double play when it was not available.
Bowa, the Phillies' everyday short-stop in 1970-81, then talked about range, which many think Peralta lacks in his game.
Becoming a candidate for his first ever Gold Glove, Peralta is considered to be one of the best fielding short-stops in the American League. The winners of the Gold Glove are expected to be announced in a week’s time. However, whatever the results are for
the Gold Glove awards, considering Bowa’s views, we can safely realise that he had a great year at short-stop.
With veteran players like Larry Bowa complimenting Jhonny Peralta on their competitive performance is considered almost as an endorsement. This support can always help the player build confidence and bring more attention to their good performances.
Peralta had a tremendous year with the Detroit Tigers this season. The Tigers managed to eliminate the New York Yankees in the exciting playoff series. It will be interesting to see if Peralta will win the Gold Glove award to recognise his commitment to
the short-stop postion for his team. The fans will have to wait for the final announcement to see who wins the Gold Glove award for this season.
